There are extensive and spectacular coral reefs along the East African coast and around the Indian Ocean Islands too.
The reefs along Africa’s east coast, although they are not contiguous, run all the way from Sodwana Bay in South Africa to the southern Somali coast.
In some areas, particularly on the islands it can be very rewarding to begin snorkeling right off the beach but some sites are on offshore reefs and require boat transportation. Professional diving tour companies operate in most of the major tourist areas of Southern and East Africa as well as the Indian Ocean Islands.
Most resorts have professional dive masters and also rent out gear. Some lodges and resorts offer brief diving courses too.
