NAMIBIA

Namibia is a vast country of wide open arid plains, towering sand-dunes, a spectacularly wild coastline and in the north, broad rivers and tropical wetlands.

At the dramatic Etosha National Park mighty elephant tower over pretty springbok and rapier horned gemsbok as they gather around waterholes that are dotted across the pancake flat plains. In turn, lion and cheetah wait patiently to begin stalking their next meal. Elsewhere holidaymakers in hot air balloons soar silently over the red dunes at Sossusvlei, some of the highest sand dunes in the world.

Further north in Damaraland visitors track rare desert rhino and elephant, denizens of a harsh but beautiful landscape framed by mountains and sky. To the west the often mist-shrouded Skeleton

Coast runs all the way to the Angolan border, its mysteriously beautiful beaches scattered with the remains of ships fallen prey to treacherous currents.

The Caprivi Strip in the north-east, forms an area of savannah-woodland that gives way to vivid green riverine forest that lines the banks of the broad Okavango River, and further east the mighty Zambezi.

These rivers and surrounding floodplains nurture plenty of big game, including water-loving species like hippo, crocodile, sable, waterbuck, reedbuck and buffalo, which are largely absent from the rest of Namibia. Birdlife is varied and abundant.

Namibia’s enigmatic Himba people live in the remote north-west of the country, their traditional lifestyle a hint of times gone by.

Across the country, character filled, owner-run lodges offer unsurpassed local knowledge and great personal service.

Hartley’s can find you the perfect mix of accommodation and experiences to ensure your Namibian holiday matches your dreams.
