RWANDA

Rwanda is a country of mysterious volcanic mountains shrouded in mist, rolling green hills and unforgettable images of massive mountain gorillas feeding peacefully in forest glades.

The soaring Virunga Mountains, the highest peak reaches 4507 metres (14,873 feet), form the habitat of the fabled mountain gorillas, one of the most endangered creatures in the world. Only about 880 remain with some living in neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Trekking up the densely forested slopes of the volcanic mountains in the Volcano National Park (Parc National des Volcans) to spot the giant and gentle primates, is one of the highlights of a lifetime.

The Park forms part of a World Heritage Site and plays a vital role in ensuring their continued survival. Elsewhere in the country various parks protect dense montane rainforest and wildlife. Rwanda also boasts an astonishing array of birdlife.

The stunning Lake Kivu, which is shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo, offers beautiful views and good beaches. Hartley’s can plan your gorilla viewing to perfection as well many other experiences in this small but fascinating country.
