13 Feb Touring a Township
Soweto is perhaps the most interesting township (a township is a residential area where black people were forced to live during the apartheid years) to visit because its name is synonymous with the struggle against apartheid.
The vast vibrant residential area has many landmarks relating to the conflict of that period. Vilikazi Street is the only road in the world which boasts two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, as former residents.
There are many restaurants where one can enjoy a drink or traditional meal, as well as museums and other places of interest. Apartheid laws no longer apply in South Africa and people can live in any area which they can afford.
